This painting is by the Frenchman François Bunel, court painter to King Henry IV. It gives an impression of what an artist’s studio or gallery looked like at the end of the sixteenth century. This studio is located in an open gallery. Statues and paintings are out on display, and prints and drawings hang on the wall. A lady is looking on in resignation at the contents being confiscated and taken away in chests.

Second World War

This painting is part of the Netherlands Art Property Collection (‘NK collection’): objects that were stolen, seized or purchased during the Nazi regime. After the Second World War they were placed under the administration of the Dutch State. In recent decades, applications for restitution are taken into consideration again and some objects have been returned to the heirs of their rightful owners.
