On a summer’s day, a group of people have gathered by a simple tent. A wagon and a carriage are driving along the beach and there are boats on the surf. The horizon is extremely low, making it seem as if we are sitting on the beach ourselves. It also provides plenty of space for the impressive cloudy sky and the soft yellow glow of the sunlight. Adriaen van de Velde was a master in depicting this sort of atmospheric effect.
