Rembrandt, Self-Portrait, 1669
Rembrandt made more than 80 self-portraits. This one originated in the year of his death, 1669. It is a sample of Rembrandt’s late work: coarsely painted in brown hues. Rembrandt almost modelled the paint. This can be seen better than ever before now that the discoloured varnish has been removed.
In addition, the self-portrait turns out to have been somewhat larger initially. The edges were folded back at some point in time. The painting can now be seen in its original format.
