Small groups of boats rest on the water beneath a silvery-grey sky. There is barely any wind: the sails hang limp and are reflected in the smooth surface of the water. Between the vessels, the water can be seen stretching out into the far distance.

The Amsterdam painter Jan van de Cappelle specialised in seascapes depicting fishing boats, a low horizon and plenty of space for imposing cloudy skies. This painting is one of his larger works. With its sheer size and tremendous sense of depth, it has a monumental presence.
