Frans van Mieris the Elder
Portrait of Florentius Schuyl (1619-1669)
The 47-year-old Florentius Schuyl leans back with a nonchalant and self-assured air entirely befitting of someone recently appointed as the new chancellor of Leiden University. Professor Schuyl was a botanist, which explains the terracotta pot containing a verbascum.
This small portrait was painted by Frans van Mieris the Elder, one of the Leiden 'fijnschilders' (literally ‘fine painters’). He painted it on a sheet of copper, an extremely smooth surface well suited to his detailed painting style. There is not a single loose brushstroke in sight.
