Portrait of a Young Woman

This is one of two portraits by Rubens that hang in the Gallery. This woman with her warm, loving expression was long believed to be Rubens’s first wife, Isabella Brant. The second portrait was thought to show his second wife, Hélène Fourment. Although Rubens chiefly painted people from his immediate surroundings, whether these two portraits actually depict his wives is unknown.
