Museum visit for primary education

The Mauritshuis has several lesson programmes for primary education. They are described below. However, we will be happy to help you design tailor-made educational programmes.

Maurits Mouse, Mauritshuis

Maurits Mouse

In this varied programme, the youngest pupils get to know a museum in general, and the Mauritshuis in particular. Maurits Mouse lives at the Mauritshuis and invites the pupils to come visit him. Together with Maurits Mouse, they will examine his favourite paintings, and then get to practice as real painters at the Art Workshop.

  • Target group: primary education, 4 - 8 year
  • Duration: 75 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Costs: € 60 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl

The world in a painting

During this lesson, the pupils will discover that the world looks very real in a painting, but it still was created by a painter. He used his fantasy to make the paintings as beautiful as possible. During the workshop, the pupils will make a fantasy animal that could live inside a painting.

  • Target group: primary education, 5 - 8 year
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Costs: € 75 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl

Paintings tell stories

This special tour starts with a story from the Mauritshuis story book, written by a famous children's book writer. After listening to the story, the pupils examine the painting with different eyes and, together with a museum teacher, go look for other special paintings. They also create a story for a painting together with the class.

  • Target group: primary education, 6 - 10 year
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Costs: € 50 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl

Watch and being watched

Portraits are at the centre of this programme. The pupils examine famous portraits by Dutch Masters together with a museum teacher, and then get to practice themselves at the Art Workshop using another medium: photography. The pupils make portrait photos of each other and learn about the effects of standpoint, cropping, and composition.

  • Target group: primary education, 7 - 12 year
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 75 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge
  • This programme can also be booked in combination with a visit to the exhibition Neighbours: Portraits from Flanders 1400-1700  (7 September 2017 - 14 January 2018)

Selfies from the Golden Age

In this lesson programme, a link is made between the self-portraits from the Golden Age and contemporary selfies. The pupils first visit the permanent collection with a museum teacher, and go examine several portraits and self-portraits and discuss them with each other. Then, during a workshop, they step back into the present time and get to work with contemporary self-portraits. How do you make the perfect selfie?

  • Target group: primary education, 7 - 12 year
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 75 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl

Highlight Tour

This guided tour combines watching, discussing, and doing. Together, the group examines several important paintings from the Mauritshuis collection (such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Anatomy Lesson by Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt). They discuss them and are given short assignments which challenge them to do their own research and discoveries.

  • Target group: primary education, 7 - 12 year
  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 60, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 50 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge

Paint? Make it yourself

After observing several masterpieces with a museum teacher, the students discover that making a painting might be more complicated than they thought. In the 17 century, paint didn't come out of a tube, but had to be made. During a workshop at the Art Workshop, the students experience how that's done.

  • Audience: primary education, 6 - 12 year
  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of students: maximum 30, 1 museum teacher is available for each 15students.
  • Cost: € 75 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 students free of charge

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl

Special education

All of our programmes can be adjusted for special education upon request. Please contact one of our staff at educatie@mauritshuis.nl. For special education, the same rate applies per museum teacher, and the groups are smaller with maximum 10 pupils per museum teacher.
