Museum visit for secondary education

The Mauritshuis offers several lesson programmes for secondary education. They are described below.
However, we will be happy to help you design tailor-made educational programmes.

Selfies from the Golden Age

In this lesson programme, a link is made between the self-portraits from the Golden Age and contemporary selfies. The pupils first visit the permanent collection with a museum teacher, and go examine several portraits and self-portraits and discuss them with each other. Then, during a workshop, they step back into the present time and get to work with contemporary self-portraits. How do you make the perfect selfie?

  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 30, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 75 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge
  • Language: Dutch and English

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl.

Seen differently

In order to better understand a painting, it can be helpful to know the way in which a painter uses composition, colour, and light in his work. Based on the highlights from our collection, the pupils investigate these aspects with a museum teacher. Then, the pupils get to put things into practice with an assignment which makes a link with contemporary art.

Guided tour Hightlights

This guided tour combines watching, discussing, and doing. Together, the group examines several important paintings from the Mauritshuis collection (such as Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Anatomy Lesson by Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt). They discuss them and are given short assignments which challenge them to do their own research and discoveries.

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Number of pupils: maximum 60, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 50 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge
  • Language: Dutch, English, French, German and Spanish

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl.

Final exams

Special exam programmes can be booked for final exam pupils upon request. These are interactive tours during which the museum teacher discusses paintings which are related to the exam topics.

  • Number of pupils: maximum 60, with one museum teacher for each 15 pupils
  • Cost: € 50 per museum teacher, 2 supervisors per 15 pupils free of charge
  • Language: Dutch and English

For reservations and further information, please contact one of our employees at educatie@mauritshuis.nl.

The Golden Tour

Using this app, pupils take an interactive tour through the Mauritshuis. Engaging questions, interesting short movies, and a surprising dénouement challenge them to view the paintings from the Golden Age differently. The tour provides a lot of knowledge about the Golden Age, it stimulates conscious viewing, and makes connections between past and present.

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Cost: The Golden Tour is part of the Mauritshuis app. It can be downloaded for free in the App Store and on Google Play. For those without a smartphone, a device may be rented at the reception of the Mauritshuis.
