Willem van de Velde II often painted seascapes with a low horizon, calm weather and big cumuli that stand out against a blue sky. The slack sails provide an atmospheric interplay of light and shade.

In the centre is a richly decorated yacht flying the Dutch flag. It is surrounded by cargo ships at anchor and a few rowing boats bringing passengers to and from the shore.
