There is a cheerful atmosphere at this country inn, where a travelling violin player has come to play a tune. He is accompanied on the hurdy-gurdy by the boy in the red jacket. Both young and old are enjoying the music.

The Haarlem artist Adriaen van Ostade painted a great many merry companies of peasants and country folk. He was an example to Jan Steen, and may even have been his master.
