Frits Duparc was director of the Mauritshuis from 1991 until 2008. He and Van Dedem, who regularly lent paintings to the museum, became good friends. Van Dedem asked Duparc to choose five paintings from his collection, but: ‘He really had to be able to demonstrate that the chosen work would fill a gap in the museum collection.’
Van Dedem’s gift was announced in September 2002. That same year his wife produced this bronze bust of Duparc, which the couple donated to the Mauritshuis.
