Portrait of Floris van Egmond (1469-1539)

1519 Non visible

This is Floris van Egmond, Count of Buren and Leerdam, and Lord of IJsselstein. He became stadholder of Holland, Zeeland and West-Friesland in 1518, and had this portrait painted by Jan Gossaert the following year. Gossaert paid great attention to Van Egmond’s fashionable clothing of white damask, gold brocade and sable. The insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a prestigious order of knights of the Habsburg emperor, hangs on a velvet chain.
