Partners in Science
As Partners in Science, the Mauritshuis and Shell have committed to undertake a joint research project into paintings from the Mauritshuis’s collection over the coming years.
Shell – in common with the Mauritshuis – enjoys an international reputation for its expertise and research programmes. A key element of the partnership will be the analysis of paint samples from paintings in the Mauritshuis’s collection by the Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA).
Shell already has research experience in this field thanks to its earlier collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum. Working together with the Mauritshuis’s conservators, Shell will make use of this experience to carry out further research into Jan Steen’s oeuvre, as well as the wall and ceiling paintings painted by Pellegrini for the museum’s Golden Hall.
Shell will make equipment available for these projects, but the true value of the partnership lies in the sharing of expertise and interaction between Shell’s researchers and the Mauritshuis’s conservators.
The series of paintings by Pellegrini in the Golden Room are sparkling once again.
Through an extensive research we hope to obtain further insights into Jan Steen's development.
