Friends of the Mauritshuis Foundation
The Johan Maurits van Nassau Foundation was set up in 1957, with the aim to support the museum in expanding the collection, funding exhibitions and supporting publications. The foundation bought paintings itself, and placed them on long-term loan to the museum.
In 1982, a second organisation was created: the Friends of the Mauritshuis Foundation, which had as its aim to raise funds. In 1986, both foundations were merged and energetically set out to attract volunteers, friends and benefactors. Acquisitions remained a principal objective.
In 1987, the volunteers organisation was created in order to provide services, such as offering guided tours of the museum and manning the shop and the information booth. The money raised in this way benefits the foundation. The volunteers organisation of the Mauritshuis is one of the oldest of the Dutch museums community, and celebrated its 25th birthday in 2012.
In 2014, an extra group of friends was created: 'De Companen'.
For the many expatiates in The Hague and its surroundings, there is now also an International Friends Group. This group organises various activities and events in English for its international friends and for the large expatriate community in The Hague.
