Thomas Coke was 17 when he had his portrait painted in Venice by Rosalba Carriera. Her portraits were highly sought after by English tourists, who showered her with commissions. Such a small portrait on ivory could easily be taken home in one’s luggage.

Thomas’s Grand Tour lasted all of six years, much longer than most. After returning to England, he embarked on the construction of Holkham Hall.
