Vesuvius, the volcano near Naples, was very active in the 18th century. As noted in Brownlow Cecil’s hand on the back of the canvas, this is Pietro Fabris’s depiction of the violent eruption of 1767. It took place between 19 and 27 October of that year.

The approaching stream of lava looks terrifying, and yet groups of spectators have come quite close and are pointing excitedly at the spectacle. Is this a day trip or disaster tourism?
