Stephan Vanfleteren, one of the world's leading photographers, is creating new work for the Mauritshuis. In each of the Mauritshuis's 16 rooms, he draws inspiration from a specific painting or a particular theme in that room.
Martine Gosselink, general director of the Mauritshuis, has asked Vanfleteren to view the museum's entire collection through his lens, searching for the essence of the works. Together, they have walked through the rooms looking for signs and clues. What lessons, intentions and thoughts from that time remain? What meanings do some paintings still have today?
Photographs by a 21st-century master engage in dialogue with paintings by 17th-century masters, which will undoubtedly result in a fascinating conversation. Visitors will soon be able to view 17th-century paintings through Vanfleteren's lens.
