Crafting queen

Mauritshuis Make It Jill

Last summer, Jill – also known as the Queen of Craft – made a fantastic activity trail for us, with all her favourite paintings at our museum. That included Girl with a Pearl Earring of course, but Jill also had other paintings in her sights, featuring flowers, animals and lots lots more. Kids simply loved completing the activities: finding the answers, looking carefully and colouring in. And now Jill is back at the Mauritshuis, permanently.

Activities for kids: Jill Tour (7+)

Did you know that the Mauritshuis is Jill's favorite museum? She created a fun filled tour along her favorite paintings. There's also an audio tour where Jill tells you what she sees and what catches her attention.

With this booklet, children aged 7 and older learn to look at paintings, from colourful bouquets of flowers to Jill's favorite painting: Girl with a pearl earring. In the booklet, which contains tons of playful illustrations, there are, many fun observation and drawing assignments. You can even try your hand at drawing your own fantasy museum or favorite pose.

Pick up the free booklets at the service desk in the Foyer and set out on an adventure! Don't forget to pick up a small surprise at the service desk afterwards.

About Jill Schirnhofer

Jill Schirnhofer, Jill Rocket, or simply Jill, is an illustrator, writer, programme maker and actor. Drawing is one of her great passions. Jill designed her first school diary when she was just 15. Her unique design did not go unnoticed. A Dutch publisher was keen to manufacture the design, and so her label My Life is Sweet was born. She has since created an entire range of school stuff for the label.

In 2014 she started making her kids’ programme Jill, broadcast on Dutch national television (Avrotros Zapp NPO 3), in which she gives creative advice on fashion, drawing and – of course – crafting.

Interactive family exhibition Hello Vermeer!

Summer 2022 at the Mauritshuis was all about our interactive family exhibition Hello Vermeer!, where kids aged 3 and over could follow in the footsteps of world-famous painter Johannes Vermeer. Puzzles, videos and fancy dress took them on a voyage of discovery through his world.

For a while, our gallery was the portal to another dimension, as kids were transported back in time to 17th-century Delft. Why is Girl with a Pearl Earring so popular? And how come Vermeer was a master of illusion? Hello Vermeer! has all the answers.
At the end of August, Hello Vermeer! started its second life when it moved to the Princess Máxima Centre in Utrecht. It’s not so easy for the kids who stay at the centre for treatment to go to museums, so we’ve taken the museum to them. We hope that the art will enable them to forget their illness for a while.
