One painting, one performer, one great song. With View the Mauritshuis with Your Ears, we ask well-known performers to draw inspiration from artworks in our collection. Next up is Dutch singer-songwriter Eefje de Visser. She’s going to write a new song based on a painting.

Eefje de Visser's choice

Together with Mauritshuis’ Geert-Jan Borgstein Eefje de Visser visits a empty Mauritshuis. She is looking for a painting that’s all about opulence. It’s love at first sight with Garland of Fruit surrounding a Depiction of Cybele Receiving Gifts from Personifications of the Four Seasons by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrik van Balen. To Eefje de Visser the painting is heavenly and kitsch, but in a beautiful way. The opulence she was looking for splashes off the canvas. It also reminds her a bit of Liberace: over-the-top and shameless. A perfect starting point for a new song.

About Eefje de Visser

Eefje de Visser (1986) is a Dutch singer-songwriter. In 2009 she won the famous Dutch music award De Grote Prijs van Nederland with her alternative, Dutch pop songs. Her first albums (The biscuit, 2011 and It Is, 2013) contain dreamy indie pop songs, but since her third album Nightlight (2016) she increasingly leans towards electronic music and adds synthesizers, drum computers and warm basses to her songs. Eefje de Visser is praised for the way in which she deals with language; like a kind of intuitive prose. In 2020 she received two Edisons: one for best alternative artist and one for her latest album Bittersweet (2020).
