Building and sustainability

Museum het Mauritshuis aanzicht met de Hofvijver en het Binnenhof in Den Haag

We exhibit our collection in two historic buildings. First, there is the Mauritshuis, a 17th-century city palace located on the Plein in The Hague, built by order of its namesake Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen. We also display our art in the Prince William V Gallery at the Buitenhof, founded by Stadtholder Prince William V.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority for us. Naturally, we take great care in preserving our irreplaceable masterpieces. It is also important that we contribute to preserving our irreplaceable world. This way, the Mauritshuis remains a place where future generations can admire our collection.

BREEAM Certificate

In recent years, many sustainable steps have already been taken within the organization. Since 2019, we have held a BREEAM certificate, which stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.
BREEAM is a method used in more than 80 countries to assess the sustainability performance of a building. To get the most complete picture of sustainability, the BREEAM method evaluates the building, its maintenance, and its use based on nine categories: management, health, energy, transport, water, material flows, land use, ecology, and pollution.
In 2022, we improved our BREEAM certificate score to ‘Very Good/Excellent’—a result we are proud of! A plaque of the certificate can be found in the foyer of the Mauritshuis.
We are currently busy with the recertification of the BREEAM certificate, which will take place later this year. By the end of 2025, we hope to receive a new certificate.
