Travellers Ambushed by Brigands

c. 1670 On view in Room 12

In the mountains, a convoy of horses, carriages and armed escorts is attacked by a band of brigands. Shots are fired, and victims fall. There is a wild flurry of figures and horses. The steep, jagged rocks lend extra drama to the scene.

The Haarlem painter Berchem made this painting after a model by Pieter van Laer.
