Mauritshuis X Vogelbescherming

Together for BIRDS

As part of the exhibition BIRDS – Curated by The Goldfinch & Simon Schama, the Mauritshuis and Vogelbescherming Nederland are bringing art and nature together. Inspired by the exhibition’s curator and Carel Fabritius’s iconic Goldfinch, we’re working to bring more goldfinches to your neighbourhood! After all, the number of birds says a lot about the state of nature. The more there are, the greener and healthier your surroundings.

From March 1 to June 7, every visitor to the BIRDS exhibition will receive a free bag of "Putter Mix"(tr. Goldfinch Mix). This organic flower seed mix helps create space for more birds, flowers, and insects - right in your garden or on your balcony. Sow the seeds and turn your neighbourhood into a true goldfinch paradise!

The Puttermix is available while stocks last!

More 'Putters', please!

Is there anything better than waking up to birdsong? Yet it’s becoming less and less common. It’s getting quieter around us. More bird species are struggling and some are even at risk of disappearing. For over a century, Vogelbescherming Nederland has been working to protect wild birds and their habitats. The Mauritshuis - as the proud owner of one of the most iconic birds in the arts - is delighted to support this cause.

Bird Count 2026

During the bird count in February 2026, around 9,000 goldfinches were recorded in the Netherlands. If everyone makes their neighbourhood goldfinch-friendly with the Goldfinch Mix, that number could rise significantly. The flowers also attract other birds, such as the house sparrow and the blackbird. That's great news for biodiversity in the Netherlands. So, will you join us?

Plant your own “Putter” Paradise

From March 1 to June 7, every visitor to the BIRDS exhibition can pick up a free bag of Putter Mix. These organic flower seeds will make your garden or balcony interesting for goldfinches and other birds. Just show your ticket in the foyer to collect your bag.

Each bag is worth €3.

How it works:
1. Pick a nice spot, like a garden, balcony or window box.
2. Scatter the flower seeds in May or June.
3. Water them regularly.

Enjoy your very own “Putter” Paradise!
