In the autumn of 2027, the work of Nicolas Party (Switzerland, 1980) will be on display simultaneously at two museums in The Hague, each with its own distinct character: Museum Voorlinden, which focuses on contemporary art, and the Mauritshuis, home to 17th-century masterpieces. Party has a great love for the Mauritshuis and 17th-century Dutch painting, and this has prompted a special collaboration between the two museums.
In the exhibition at Voorlinden, this artist uses soft pastel chalk to transform entire spaces into whole worlds through his murals, paintings and sculptures. Eight works from the Mauritshuis’s collection form part of Party’s impressive immersive experience at Voorlinden. At the same time, the Mauritshuis is exhibiting Party’s landscapes, still lifes and portraits alongside its own masters. This creates a unique dialogue between the present and the past, between the old masters and a contemporary artist, and connects the two museums in The Hague in a surprising way.
Nicolas Party’s work will be on display at the Mauritshuis from 16 September 2027 to 12 March 2028. The solo exhibition at Museum Voorlinden runs from 25 September 2027 to 12 March 2028.
