Tips from The Girl

Een meisje met een parel oorbel en een tulband keert zich naar de kijker

Dear reader,

As of right now, I am traveling to Japan. Additionally, from Monday, August 24th through Sunday, September 20th, the Mauritshuis will be closed to the public due to renovations. So, I won't be able to welcome you to the Mauritshuis for a little while.

But don't worry: I have been a resident of The Hague for quite some time now, so I know the city like the back of my hand! On this page, you will find a few of my favorite hotspots, the most beautiful museums, and tips for a perfect day out.

In The Hague, you can stroll past royal palaces and enjoy lovely outdoor terraces and charming restaurants. The beach and dunes are close by, but you can also shop to your heart's content in the bustling shopping streets of the city center. From our museum, the extraordinary city of The Hague lies right at your feet.

Starting October 5th, I will be hanging right back in my familiar spot in the museum. I look forward to seeing you again soon at the Mauritshuis.

Love,

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Prince William V Gallery

Walk from the Mauritshuis along the Hofvijver and you’ll reach the Prince William V Gallery in just ten minutes. It was built in the 18th century to house the impressive painting collection of Prince William V, which later became the foundation of the Mauritshuis collection. What makes this especially remarkable is that he was the first high-ranking figure to open his collection to the general public.

At the time, it was customary to hang paintings densely on the walls, from floor to ceiling. The Gallery is still arranged much the same way today. Around 150 Old Masters from the Mauritshuis collection (including works by Jan Steen, Peter Paul Rubens, and Paulus Potter) hang side by side. Visit the Gallery and step back in time!

A single ticket for the gallery costs €8.50 and can be purchased at the Gevangenpoort ticket desk.

Escher in The Palace

With over 120 prints, the most famous works from the oeuvre of Maurits C. Escher are always on display at Escher in The Palace. His world-famous metamorphoses are true brain-teasers. You can stare at them for hours!
On the second floor, you step into the artist's world yourself: puzzle with your eyes, discover with your hands, and become part of Escher's realm of experience. Your eyes tell you one thing, but your brain says another. How is that even possible?

Museum Bredius

Right across from the Mauritshuis on the Hofvijver in The Hague lies Museum Bredius. Housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, it displays the personal collection of Dr. Abraham Bredius. He was a great art connoisseur, archival researcher, publicist, collector, and former director of the Mauritshuis.
Among the 200 paintings and drawings, you will find works by famous masters such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Aert van de Neer, and Meindert Hobbema.

Panorama Mesdag

At Panorama Mesdag, it is beach weather every day! The panorama, measuring 120 meters in length and 14 meters in height, offers a unique view of Scheveningen in 1881.

Vincent van Gogh also stood on the belvedere during the opening and admired the panorama from this very spot. He said: "...The only thing wrong with the Panorama of Scheveningen is that there is nothing wrong with it...".

Let's go for a walk!

Are you in the mood for a walk? The Mauritshuis is located in the political heart of the Netherlands and is surrounded by famous buildings.
Of course, renovations are currently underway at the Binnenhof, but the area around the impressive complex with the Hofvijver and the Torentje (little tower) is still very much worth a visit. You might already recognize Het Plein, Spui, and Lange Poten from the Dutch Monopoly board.
It is lovely to stroll along the Lange Voorhout. From here, it is only a short distance to Noordeinde Palace, the working palace of the King.
Want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment? Just walk through the gates into the peaceful Palace Garden. Do you still have some energy left? The surrounding shopping streets are filled with well-known brands and cute little boutiques. Be sure to walk through De Passage as well!
