Collection on tour
During the renovation, the collection of the Mauritshuis was on display in several different museums in the Netherlands and abroad. A selection of masterpieces, including Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer and The Goldfinch by Fabritius took a world tour to museums in Japan, the US, and Italy
This tour was an unprecedented success and attracted millions of visitors worldwide. Girl with a Pearl Earring achieved veritable stardom, causing long waits for entry to all the museums. At each location showing the masterpieces of the Mauritshuis, expected attendance figures were exceeded. The Mauritshuis was frequently mentioned in the international media. Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring proved to be a fantastic ambassador for our museum.
In the Netherlands and Belgium, parts of the collection were displayed at various other museums. Over one hundred masterpieces, including The Bull by Paulus Potter and The Anatomy Lesson by Rembrandt were hosted for two years by the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. Other, smaller groups were displayed at Paleis het Loo, the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Dordrechts Museum, the Amsterdam Museum and the Frans Hals Museum, and others.
