International Women's Day

8 - 10 March

0889 Bartholomäus Bruyn De Oude Elisabeth Bellinghausen

Once again this year, the Mauritshuis is organizing events around International Women's Day, and since it falls on a Friday, we're extending it to a full weekend! Come by the Mauritshuis on March 8, 9, and 10.

Isn't it odd that we rarely hear women's voices from the past? For instance, because the sources have disappeared or were never recorded? This is also the case in our own collection, both for the women whose faces and names we know and for those who appear anonymously in our works.

We'll be honest: Most of the activities during this weekend will be in Dutch and can be found on the Dutch version of this page. However, we also offer some exciting English tours around the museum, specifically on the 10th of March.

Women in Art

Ask people to name a female artist from the 17th century, and you'll likely be met with silence. Why do we know so few female artists from that time? Were they not there? On the contrary.

In this tour, we'll take you along the hidden gems of history. Move over, Rembrandt. Here are Clara Peeters, Michaelina Wautier, and many others.

When - March 10th at 14:00

Duration- Around one hour

Price - €4,25, excl. tickets for the museum

Crossdressing in the 17th century

Maria van Antwerpen disguised herself as a man and served as a soldier three times. Cornelia Gerritse van Bruegel also dressed as a man to marry Elisabeth Boleyn. Princess Maria van Oranje had herself portrayed in men's clothing.

What roles did women have in the 17th century? And what if they couldn't or didn't want to conform to them?
