A group of horsemen are arriving at a tent being used as an inn, indicated by the tankard hanging on the pole. One of the men is playing his trumpet, while another has already found himself a sweetheart.

Wouwerman, who specialised in horse painting, chose an active scene here for depicting his favourite subject. Dark clouds drift overhead, the flags are flapping and the horses are restless.
