One painting, one performer, one great song. Thanks to our new ‘music label’ View the Mauritshuis with Your Ears, we are taking a fresh look at our art. After Spinvis and MEROL, it’s the turn of Harrie Jekkers.

Harrie Jekkers’ choice

Harrie came to the Mauritshuis well-prepared, because it turned out that he already had a painting in mind. A masterpiece that evoked many memories of his youth. He chose the painting View of Delft from c.1660-1661 by Johannes Vermeer. Jekkers: ‘The View of Delft is like having an extra window in your room to look out of. The painting has got everything, which makes me think: we’re going to write a beautiful poetic song about it’. Face to face with the painting, one sentence sprang to Jekkers’ mind: ‘By God it’s beautiful!’

In the track View of Delft, Harrie Jekkers sings about his memories of the city. From his first love to his first kiss near the Nieuwe Kerk.

About Harrie Jekkers

Harrie is a true ‘Hagenees’, born in the area of the Hague known as the painters’ district and raised in the city’s Moerwijk neighbourhood. Inspired by his father, Harrie – having spent several years as a teacher – started writing songs and lyrics. He became famous in 1982 with the song ‘O, o, Den Haag’, The Hague’s unofficial anthem. Jekkers, a Jack-of-all-trades, began his career as a cabaret performer three years later.

We’re thrilled that the next track on our playlist has been recorded by a performer with roots in the Hague.
